He didn’t depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin. Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and struck him before the people and killed him, and reigned in his place. Now the rest of the acts of Zechariah, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. This was the LORD ’s word which he spoke to Jehu, saying, “ Your sons to the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.” So it came to pass.

Pul the king of Assyria came against the land, and Menahem gave Pul one thousand talents of silver, that his hand might be with him to confirm the kingdom in his hand. So the king of Assyria turned back, and didn’t stay there in the land.
Menahem attempted to buy national safety and personal power by taxing his citizens to bribe a pagan invader, relying on human financial schemes rather than repentance before Yahweh.
Seeking safety through worldly compromises creates a dangerous trap, whereas putting trust in Yahweh keeps a believer truly secure.
Faced with the rising superpower of Assyria, King Menahem chose extortion and foreign tribute instead of seeking God. He heavily taxed the wealthy to bribe King Pul. While this temporarily turned the enemy away, it drained the nation's wealth and made Israel a helpless tributary vassal. Short-term compromises to preserve worldly position only invite deeper servitude and moral decay.

Even the best kings of Judah recorded in this chapter, Azariah and Jotham, were limited. Azariah was struck with leprosy due to temple pride, and Jotham left the high places standing. Human leaders, even god-fearing ones, are flawed and temporary. Their partial righteousness points us forward to Jesus Christ, the spotless Son of David whose throne is established forever in perfect righteousness.
